Co-owner Crystal Turk says, "Each artist will have 5-7 pieces demonstrating their own individual style. Turk's style is unique, sort of dynamic in illustration but rooted in American traditional. He loves skulls. Jacob Henry's style is also very illustrative but much more black and grey realism and portraiture. Chris Dykes highlights himself in traditional tattooing but likes to branch out to all forms of mixed media for art shows. Daggerface specializes in surrealism and abstract art. My own form is mixed media. I call it 'skull craft’ creating items l believe to be meaningful in a 'reliquary' style to last forever."
THE VISHUDDHA CREATIVES
The very first tattoo studio in South Park was The Vishuddha Creatives, located at 2226 Fern St., inside the historical Burlingame Garage complex. At first glance, you wouldn't realize the space is a studio. Christopher Ryan runs the Vishuddha Creatives studio and gallery. He says, “We were the first tattoo studio to open in South Park 51⁄2 years ago, and we find it to be a welcome place for tattoo culture, design and influence. We've done an art show for every walkabout, solo exhibitions, themed group shows and even fund raisers for charity organizations. Our clients include staffers from local businesses The Station, The Whistle Stop, Cafe Madeleine, South Park Fitness, Junc, Big Kitchen, Hamilton's, Pixie Salon, Salon on 30th, Gingerly Wax, and many others."
Ryan continues, "We think of The Vishuddha Creatives as a progressive design studio. The name Vishuddha is a Sanskrit work for the throat chakra, considered to be the place where creativity, truth, and voice come from. Those are elements that we try to foster, as our space has also become a resource for artists to collaborate, learn and grow creatively.” One of the studio’s core artists is Clayton Llewellyn (who also teaches, art, design, drawing and painting). “In fact, he was my figure drawing professor years ago and we have steadily influenced each other ever since,” Ryan says. Others are Brandon Lee, Chad Hartgrave and Ryan himself. “It’s important that this place have a unique, inviting, and interesting aesthetic. Our clientele spend sometimes many hours with us. We surround ourselves with curiosities and books that we reference for our projects and all these things collectively give it its own unique style.”
Diego Tattoo Gallery, is named after the owner’s pet Chihuahua Diego. Diego Tattoo is located at 1606 Fern St. San Diego, Ca 92102. The owner, Diana DeAugustine tells us about this unique tattoo studio. "Our all female staff of artists create custom imagery in a variety of styles. Our primary focus is originality and quality. The atmosphere in the shop is very relaxed and friendly. We all love painting and creating art outside of the tattooing medium and often participate in art shows around San Diego. Currently, Sophia Culpepper and Cari Coleman are offering special rates for reconstructive chest tattooing for breast cancer survivors. This includes realistic nipples as well as graphic tattooing. We all genuinely love what we do and are happy to utilize our skills for philanthropic endeavors."
Diana concludes, "Being in South Park has given us a unique opportunity to really focus on growing as artists within our craft. We rely solely on word of mouth advertising and referrals. The other shops in South Park all have fantastic reputations, and we are proud to work in a neighborhood with so much amazing talent all within a square mile."
So many of the boutiques and restaurants have the influence of art in their design aesthetics and merchandise. For example, Junc.Life's logo design and some merchandise is totally derivative of tattoo-style art. You'll find many curiosities and off-beat items to adorn your home or lifestyle.
