South Park is home to many restaurants. In fact, we just experienced our first annual Taste of South Park. Bravo to local business owners, Will Gustwiller from Eclipse Chocolate and Adam Lance Parker from Brabant Cafe & Bar. They orchestrated this entire event. The pair felt it was time South Park got some recognition for its culinary diversity and hopefully land us on the foodie map. Online tickets sold out fast! There were tastes at special prices and drink specials at participating restaurants and bars. A smorgasbord of food choices were represented and 19 businesses were part of the first run. Bet you didn't even realize there were that many restaurants. After a successful first go round, we look forward to the next one.
South Park is a shopping destination. There are over a dozen locally-owned shops in our neighborhood. The unique shops that line the streets, range from vintage to new clothing, furniture, jewelry, handmade items, to children's books and toys. You can find beauty products and services, home accessories, artwork and many gift items. These small businesses deliver big and offer up more obscure brands, to make your shopping experience more specialized. Some must-see shops are Junc.Life, Graffiti Beach, Bad Madge, Make Good, Progress, So Childish, West Grove South Park, Brake and Rumble, and South Park Dry Goods. Everyone needs a little dose of retail therapy every so often. The holidays aren't far away, so start planning ahead. There's a little something for everyone and it's all waiting for you in South Park.
Thinking of getting a sitter? Don't. Bring the kids with you. There's plenty for the kids to enjoy during your visit to South Park. Station Tavern is as kid-friendly as a restaurant gets. They have a kid's menu and a big play area for your little ones to indulge in. Sit down and relax, while the kids play in the fenced in area, with a small wooden trolley. Baby Garten Studio has free demo classes for the kids during Walkabout. You can pre-register here. Looking for a unique baby gift or birthday present? So Childish carries many small lines of toys, kid's clothing and books. You can find some fun outdoor activities during Walkabout too. Some of the other shops also carry a small selection of kid's items. Another nice thing is the live music you can find scattered about the neighborhood. A variety of bands set up in front of businesses and in residential areas to put on a show for passersby. The kids will love to dance and it may help out with bedtime when you get home.
South Park is filled with so many creatively talented people. It's one of the reasons we love this place so much. Art is a major element in this neighborhood and most of the businesses reflect this, in some form or another. There are several tattoo shops, a pottery studio called Plum Pottery, a sewing studio for kids and adults alike, called Home Ec. Studio and we can't forget Studio Maureen and the Next Door Gallery. There certainly is no shortage of artwork to purchase in this little slice of San Diego.
